Modeling of Linear Objects Considering Bend, Twist, and Extensional Deformations

چکیده
A systematic approach to the modeling of deformable ne linear objects is presented. Various deformable objects are manipulated in many manufacturing processes. Deformation of these objects is often utilized in order to manipulate them successfully while the manipulation sometimes fails because of unexpected deformation of the objects. Modeling of deformable objects is thus required so that the shape of the objects can be evaluated on a computer in advance. In this paper, we will develop an analytical method to model the shape of a deformable linear object such as cords and tubes. First, a geometric representation to describe the shape of a linear object with bending and torsional deformation is introduced. The potential energy of the object and the geometric constraints imposed on it are then formulated. The shape of the object in the stable state can be derived by minimizing the potential energy under the geometric constraints. Next, procedure to compute the deformed shape is developed by applying a nonlinear programming technique. Finally, some numerical examples are shown in order to demonstrate how deformed shapes of linear objects are computed using the proposed approach.

Chiral structures from achiral liquid crystals in cylindrical capillaries.
We study chiral symmetry-broken configurations of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) confined to cylindrical capillaries with homeotropic anchoring on the cylinder walls (i.e., perpendicular surface alignment). Interestingly, achiral nematic LCs with comparatively small twist elastic moduli relieve bend and splay deformations by introducing twist deformations. In the resulting twisted and escaped ra...
متن کاملStatistical mechanics of bend flexoelectricity and the twist-bend phase in bent-core liquid crystals.
We develop a Landau theory for bend flexoelectricity in liquid crystals of bent-core molecules. In the nematic phase of the model, the bend flexoelectric coefficient increases as we reduce the temperature toward the nematic to polar phase transition. At this critical point, there is a second-order transition from high-temperature uniform nematic phase to low-temperature nonuniform polar phase c...

Free form deformations are useful for describing a class of complex motions within an animation system. Such deformations have been described using a generalization of parametric surfaces and their application to modeling is well documented. In this paper we present a method that can be applied to implicit surfaces which are defined as an iso-surface around a set of skeletal elements. The resul...
متن کاملOrigin of twist-bend coupling in actin filaments.
Actin filaments are semiflexible polymers that display large-scale conformational twisting and bending motions. Modulation of filament bending and twisting dynamics has been linked to regulatory actin-binding protein function, filament assembly and fragmentation, and overall cell motility. The relationship between actin filament bending and twisting dynamics has not been evaluated. The numerica...
متن کاملEffect of polar intermolecular interactions on the elastic constants of bent-core nematics and the origin of the twist-bend phase.
A molecular theory of both elastic constants and the flexoelectric coefficients of bent-core nematic liquid crystals has been developed taking into account dipole-dipole interactions as well as polar interactions determined by the bent molecular shape. It has been shown that if polar interactions are neglected, the elastic constants are increasing monotonically with the decreasing temperature. ...
